Introduction
English language coaching is a great way to improve your English, but you might not know how it works. This article will tell you everything you need to know about English language coaching and why it can be very beneficial for your professional and personal life.
English Language Coaching is different from other types of English teaching.
English Language Coaching is a bit different from other traditional English classes you may have taken. An English coach is part speaking partner, part English teacher, part counselor and part mentor.
An English coach helps you become a more confident and effective English speaker by guiding you to develop your non-linguistic skills like mindset, habits, techniques and strategies. Yes, we can “teach” you grammar and vocabulary, but what we are really good at is helping you reach your goals.
We help you reach your goals by working with you to clarify what you really want to be able to do in English, identifying the obstacles in your path and then setting up a plan of action. Once that plan is in place, we hold you accountable for your actions and help you determine what behaviors (or thought patterns) are the most effective for reaching your goals.
Becoming a confident English speaker is possible for everyone who does the work. Unfortunately, coaches can’t do the work for you, but they can help ensure you do the work yourself.
What does a typical Coaching session look like?
The first coaching session may look like this:
First, the coach will ask you questions about your goals, your English learning history, and your English learning environment (for example, how much time do you have to study?) Then, together, you and the coach will identify action steps that can help you get closer to your goals. These may include any or all of the following:
- overcoming limiting beliefs like perfectionism and fixed mindset
- identifying obstacles (such as finding time for studying)
- coming up with solutions for those obstacles
- establishing a reward system for staying on track
- setting short term goals with weekly check ins
- evaluating current strategies and techniques and proposing other options
In subsequent sessions, the coach will ask you what you’ve done since the last session to get closer to your goals and help you identify what’s working and what isn’t. You will probably work on a specific objective during the session and finally choose the next action steps to take. That’s how a coach helps you become a more confident and effective English speaker.
English Language Coaching can be useful in many different situations.
You can use English Language Coaching to help you with your English for work, travel and your social life. For example:
- If you are trying out a new job role or role change then an English coach can help you prepare for the interview process.
- If you speak English, but don’t feel confident using it at work, an English coach can help you develop your confidence so you can finally participate in meetings, talk to clients and make decisions with colleagues.
- If you have a basic level of English and want to improve your level, an English coach can help you design a plan to practice your English consistently.
- If you are feeling frustrated with your progress, an English language coach can help you evaluate your techniques and strategies and work with you on creating a new plan of action.
English language coaches will also assist people who wish to improve their confidence in their ability when dealing with people from different cultures or ethnicities than themselves e.g., changing jobs and going abroad for work experience; studying abroad; starting up an international business venture, etc.
